Good Art Vs. Bad Art

Good Art Vs. Bad Art

In my opinion I consider good art to be any art form that completely grabs hold of the viewers attention and continues to keep them intrigued even after multiple viewings. It could also be art that brings its audience tranquility or excitement by pulling them into its unique visual style, colors or themes. I believe that as long as the art piece stimulates a positive response from its viewers it can be considered good art. On a personal level I truly appreciate art that originates from the imagination specifically concept art used in modern entertainment like movies or video games. The art is especially interesting to me because its generally based on ideas or concepts that do not actually exist in the real world. The following image is concept art from an upcoming video game entitled Destiny. The image is an artist's interpretation of what the game world will look like. Although the piece is still just a concept, it is a unique fantasy environment that appears to be familiar and yet foreign at the same time.

What I would consider to be bad art on the other hand, is any art that does the complete opposite and pushes its viewers to generate a negative response. I feel that if the viewer questions the art or feels offended, disturbed, or confused about what the artist is trying to express, it could be considered bad art. Art can also be considered bad if the viewers feel the art is meaningless. An example of this could be the following image. It was part of a series of 16 oil on canvas paintings by the artist Jo Baer. The picture appears to be an empty canvas. I believe that art should have something visual to explore but in this case I felt the artist was leaving it to the imagination of the viewer. In my opinion I feel that this could be an example of bad art, because it kept pushing me to question what the artist was trying to express.
